Where Should You Buy Your Turkey From?

This is the 2nd post in our series titled “Twenty Two Thanksgiving Turkey Tips”.  Each day between now and Thanksgiving we’ll have a new tip for you.  Today’s tip is about where you should buy your turkey from:

We all know that deep frying your turkey produces an outstanding, flavorful, delicious, moist and juicy turkey.  But are you also aware that the type of turkey, and not just the cooking method, plays a decisive role in how well your turkey will taste?

For that reason, what kind of turkey you buy, and where you buy it from, is a very important decision when purchasing your turkey.  Below we’ve listed some of the best options for you to get the best quality turkey.

Turkey Farms

Buying your turkey from a local turkey farm is probably one of the best methods to find the perfect bird.  Shopping at these farms will help to support your local business, and more importantly, provide you with the freshest turkey possible.

Your turkey, if bought from a turkey farm, will probably be free-range as well as fresher and more nutritious than a frozen supermarket turkey due to the fact that turkeys on these farms are able to roam free and live naturally.  Also many farms adhere to certified organic standards, so if you’re looking for an organic turkey, a local farm is a great place to start.

Butcher’s Shop

The butcher’s shop is the perfect place to go if you are having a hard time finding a local turkey farm to head to directly.  Butcher’s usually have a plethora of information on their meat selection and can tell you exactly where your bird is coming from.  Most of the time your butcher should get their turkeys from turkey farms and you can buy directly from them.

To find local butcher’s just simply do a Google search for your local area butchers or drive to one you may already know of.  This way you can avoid having to buy a frozen supermarket turkey that is still fresher, tastier and healthier for your meal.

Local Grocery Store

Your local grocery store is a great “last resort” if there are no turkey farms or butcher shops in your local area.  Head to the butcher’s shop a few weeks early, and ask them what kind of turkeys they sell.  They should be sourcing them from a local or regional farm, or have a couple of different choices for you.
Although the options above will cost you a couple more dollars per pound then your regular frozen turkey, it’s well worth it.  You’ll want to remind yourself how often you cook an entire turkey (once or twice a year?), and then realize that it’s worth it to spend a few extra dollars.

Remember that the quality o the turkey you buy will have a direct correlation to the taste and texture of the turkey you serve your guests.  Buy a great bird, and have a great meal!
